  • Founded 1762 in St Helen's, more widely known as a Warrington brewery. Production in Warrington ceased in the late 1990s. This seems to be one of the rare occasions where an independent brewery's products actually improved when production moved to a national brewery. Personally, I have never forgiven them for bulldozing the wonderful Tommy Duck's pub in Manchester, a dirty deed done in the middle of the night to circumvent possible listing of the building.

Described by the first edition of the Good Beer Guide as 'Reasonably reliable - but pressurisation is increasing.'
