Founded 1824, but was engulfed by the notorious Watney's empire. Independent again since 1991 as a result of a management buy-out. Closed down 2000 when taken over by asset-strippers. The brands were bought by a company called "Refresh", for whom the beers are brewed by Thomas Hardy.

Reported by the first edition of the Good Beer Guide as having 'A little real ale still available.'
